The Global Sciences Business Technology team is focused on providing leading-edge technology solutions to enable Janssen’s therapeutic discovery and development organizations create innovative medical solutions to address important unmet medical needs in oncology, immunology, neuroscience, infectious diseases and vaccines, and cardiovascular and metabolic diseases.

The Global Sciences Business Technology team members work directly with R&D business partners to provide strategic analysis of business processes, define scientific IT requirements, and develop strategic partnerships to deliver sophisticated cross-site and multi-disciplinary projects and programs.

To achieve Janssen R&D’s dedication to increase the number of drugs it brings to the market, originating from internal efforts, we need to enable expedited exploration of a larger and more diverse molecular space through automation, utilization of novel modalities, profiling approaches and the application of data science. Every one of these challenges is dependent on the technology platforms that enable our increasingly automated laboratory systems, support the management, integration, and analysis of generated data, and provide insight and decision-making support to our researchers.

The Technology Product Owner Biologics Discovery, Global Sciences Business Technology will provide technology and organizational leadership, drive programs, assess technologies, and deliver IT solutions to enable discovery of new biologics Working with technical implementation teams across the organization, the Technology Product Owner will contribute to the ambitious digital transformation of Janssen’s Discovery Engine.

Roles & Responsibilities:

The Technology Product Owner is accountable for the full IT contribution to the following R&D capabilities:

  • Protein Generation & Selection
  • Lead Engineering & Assessment
  • Discovery Protein Production

Core responsibility of the Technology Product Owner is to work with business owners and partners to ensure a multi-year strategy and roadmap for Biologics Discovery that includes:

  • Ensuring the scalability, automation & efficiency of laboratory workflows
  • Guaranteeing discovery data is created FAIR and architected for AI/ML reuse
  • Provisioning scalable, efficient & cost-effective high-performance compute
  • Enabling intelligent automation of AI/ML training & deployment
  • Delivering experimental & predicted data into common intuitive platforms
  • Partnering with objective & key result driven prioritization & reporting

Primary activities will require the successful candidate to:

  • Define, scout, implement and champion new data-driven and scientific IT approaches across our therapeutic discovery and development organization, globally
  • Function as a strategic technology partner to R&D colleagues, translating their scientific ambition into technology solutions
  • Understand the scientific challenges of R&D partners and translate into useful insight for technology partners to deliver
  • Initiate and lead cross-site, multi-disciplinary projects with internal and external partners
  • Promote the engagement and commitment of team members and ensure excellent communication between researchers and developers.
  • Define goals and manage risks/budgets, including post project evaluations
  • Evaluate and communicate the value and weaknesses of business processes.
  • Collaborate closely with platform teams & partners (Technology Services, Data Sciences, Laboratory Systems, Intelligent Automation & Analytics, High-Performance Compute, Data Platforms, etc.) to deliver impactful technology solutions
  • Coordinate external vendor and deployment partners to ensure they meet their contracted milestones, agreed-upon timelines, and metrics using visualizations to communicate more sophisticated data relationships and trends.
  • Address complex problems with broad implications for IT architecture, balancing the often-competing needs of standardization and innovation.
  • Manage resources, reporting, deliverables, and teams across the organization

Qualifications

Qualifications: Three years confirmed pharmaceutical and/or biotech experience, AND a Master’s degree in Biomolecular Engineering, Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Data Science, or related subjects OR a Master’s degree in Life Sciences and demonstrable experience working in informatics and scientific IT functions OR a Master’s degree in Computer Science and experience applying computational methods in biologics application areas

A PhD in any of the degree subjects listed above is an advantage

  • Bilingual in both science and technology
  • Ability to work with business partners to understand and define business requirements and strategy
  • Demonstrable ability to lead complex, multi-region projects
  • Practical knowledge of the drug discovery process, from target identification to late lead optimization is required
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Comfort working in a fast-paced environment with challenging priorities, multiple partners, multi-functional teams, and changing needs.
  • Demonstrated ability to influence, negotiate, and build collaborative partnerships, teams, and trust across functions.
  • Demonstrated experience with advanced analytics, big data, and statistical analysis, and data science.
  • Experience conducting business analysis in pharmaceutical organizations is desirable
  • Ability to generate and communicate complex metrics, using data visualization tools such as Spotfire or Tableau is preferred
  • Expertise in the process of therapeutic antibody discovery and development is required
  • Practical bioinformatics expertise including complex sequence-based analysis is required
  • Experience applying omics technologies (e.g., genomics, transcriptomics, etc.) in optimizing drug discovery is desirable
  • Experience with Adeno-Associated Virus (AAV) and Lentiviral platforms is desirable
  • Understanding single and multi-omic datasets underlying cell and gene therapy workflows is desirable
  • Understanding of cellular dynamics (e.g., drug response, differentiation, pathway enrichment) is desirable
  • Demonstrable knowledge of protein chemistry, structure & function is required-question
  • Experience in protein engineering is desirable
  • Knowledge of protein structure databases is preferred and protein to protein docking experience is desirable
  • Previous practical experience using GeneData Biologics, Benchling or similar is required
